Cultural Implications of Celtic Folklore

by Arielle Wolfe-Fritz, July 31st, 2020

Celtic Folklore is saturated with stories about the Fae. Some of these beings are thought to be helpful, some are known to be a hindrance and some are a little bit of both. One fact remains true. They are a proud and mysterious race.

In this thought-provoking episode, we are going to be diving into some Celtic pagan lore surrounding the fairies and trying to grasp a better understanding of how the belief in these magical folk affected the everyday lives of the pagans. We will discuss how they regarded the Fae and what all they deemed necessary to protect themselves from the mischievous and more malevolent fairies that may have had their eyes on ancient pagan society. We are also going to be taking another look at the honorable Greenman in pagan tradition. He was a highly revered figure in an ancient pagan society and certain festivals took place to honor the return of spring and thus, the spirit of the forest itself, the Greenman.

There is one particular type of Celtic Fairy that does not match the cliche description that one usually thinks of when one imagines Fairies. Who is this Mysterious creature and what were its intentions? Journey with me again into the realm of the Fae and I invite you all to open your hearts and minds to the tales of Celtic Folklore.

J.R.R. Tolkien, who is considered to be the father of modern fantasy, drew inspiration from many different types of folklore and in just one of his stories, in particular, this is seen and thought to be a mirror of one piece of Celtic fairy folklore. The works of Tolkien, in modern times, have sparked a reawakening of our imagination and have even pushed the psyche of our collective society to re-adopt fairy folklore into our modern-day lives.

All over the world, people are retelling these wondrous tales that have been passed down through the ages and we find ourselves indulging in the idea of the realm of fantasy as our ancestors once did. It is widely accepted in this day and age to adorn ourselves with garments reflecting what we imagine the Fae to wear and take on a whole new persona, becoming one of the Fae. The Fairies have come back to us in this age of growing technology and with an open heart, we welcome them back into our lives. Will this be the dawn of a new chapter in the history of mankind wherein we look again to the magical forces of nature for answers about our place in this world and how to better live in harmony with the natural state of our planet?
